ECO CELLAR SCOOPS TOP PROPERTY AWARD

Just over a year since we finished it, our new eco cellar has triumphed in the South West's leading Commercial Property Awards.

On a night full of suspense, we and the rest of the packed dining room at Sandy Park, waited excitedly as host Judy Spiers announced the three shortlisted contenders for each of the six main categories.

Our mammoth two year project was announced as the overall winner in the ‘Eco Building of the Year' category. The five judges praised it for it's vision, intelligent engineering and for using the earth's natural core temperature of 12°C to chill the beers. 

We were up against two very strong Cornish entries; the newly opened Scarlet Hotel and Fairglen Low Energy Homes near Hayle. The Scarlet was also shortlisted in three other categories which gives a good idea as to what stiff competition we were up against.

The awards are organised by The Western Morning News and Michelmores Solicitors and look to honour innovation, diversity, environmental best practice and building excellence across the South West.

cellarThe cellar's bespoke design was inspired by David's lifetime spent in and around breweries across the land and was brought to life by two very skilled local men - architect David Highnet from Axminster and builder John Tucker who's less than a mile away in Luppitt.

The energy savings are absolutely staggering. By building the cellar half underground we have been able to utilise the earth's core temperature to naturally cool the lower level of the cellar to 12°C - the ideal temperature for storing cask ale.

It is saving the business more than 6½ tonnes of CO2 emissions per year which is the equivalent of removing 8 chillers and compressors which would otherwise be running 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.
